Which tools have it
The classroom timer, stage timer, stopwatch and interval timer have a Second screen button on computers. It isn't offered on phones.
Before you start: extend, don't mirror
The projector or monitor must be set up as an extended display, so it shows something different from your laptop. If it mirrors your screen, use full screen instead.
- Windows: press Windows key + P and choose Extend.
- Mac: System Settings, Displays, and set the projector to Extended display rather than mirroring.
Open the second screen
- Press Second screen. The clock opens alone in a new window.
- Drag that window onto the projector or monitor.
- Click anywhere in it to fill that screen. Pressing F or Enter in it does the same.
- In Chrome and Edge, the browser may ask to manage windows on all your displays. Allow it and the window moves to the other screen by itself, now and next time.
- While it is open, a note under the controls says the timer is in its own window, and the button reads Close second screen.
- Before you click it, the window shows a hint at the bottom: Drag this window to the projector, then click it for full screen. The hint and the pointer disappear in full screen.
Controls stay on your laptop
- Start, pause, reset, presets, the sound switch and messages all stay on the laptop. The big screen follows at once.
- The big screen keeps its own time from the shared start and end times, so it finishes on time even if the laptop tab is in the background.
- If you pick the cube on the laptop, the big screen shows the cube too.
- Sound plays from the laptop, not from the second screen window.
These keys also work when the second screen window has focus:
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| Space | Start, pause or resume |
| R | Reset |
| L | Lap, on the stopwatch |
| F or Enter | Fill the screen |
| Esc | Leave full screen |
Messages and colours on the stage timer
With the second screen open, the stage timer can send the speaker a message in big capitals beside the clock. The screen colours you pick show there too.
The big screen stays awake
While the second screen window is open and visible, it asks the browser to keep the display from dimming or sleeping. Low battery mode or a browser policy can refuse; plug the laptop in for long sessions.
Close it, or reconnect after a reload
- Press Close second screen to close the window. On the stage timer this also clears any message.
- Reloading the controls tab reconnects to its own second screen automatically.
- If you close the controls tab, the second screen says The controls were closed. Press Second screen on TimerFlip to pick this up again.
- Each tab drives its own second screen, so two tabs never control each other's.
If the window doesn't open
- If the browser blocks it, a note says Your browser blocked the new window. Allow pop-ups for TimerFlip, then try again. Allow pop-ups for the site in the address bar, then press Second screen again.
- If the window opened on your laptop, drag it to the other display, then click it.
- If the projector shows your laptop screen, the displays are mirrored. Switch them to extended, or use full screen.
