A stopwatch that keeps time in the background

Press Start and the clock counts up from zero in minutes, seconds and hundredths. Stop pauses it and Resume carries on from the same moment, so you can time several stretches as one total. After 99 minutes the display switches to hours, minutes and seconds.

Lap records the time since the previous press without stopping the clock. Each lap shows its own length and the running total, newest at the top, and once you have two or more the fastest and slowest are marked. Copy laps puts the whole table on your clipboard, ready to paste into Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.

The time is worked out from the moment you pressed Start rather than counted tick by tick. Switch tabs, minimise the browser or let the laptop lid half close, and the reading is still right when you come back.

Handy for

  • Running and swimming splits
  • Timing a speech or presentation
  • Science experiments
  • Speed cubing practice
  • Cooking and brewing
  • Measuring how long a task really takes

Timing things accurately

  1. Keep a finger on the keyboard

Space and L respond faster than a mouse click, which matters when a lap lasts only a few seconds.

  2. Lap instead of stopping

Stopping and restarting loses the moments in between. Let it run and press Lap at each checkpoint.

  3. Put the clock where everyone can see it

For a class or a team session, use full screen or send the stopwatch to a projector so nobody has to ask for the time.

Online Stopwatch questions

How accurate is it?

The reading comes from your device's clock, so it doesn't drift over long runs. The display shows hundredths, but your reaction time on the button is usually the bigger error.

Does it keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. It measures from the moment you pressed Start, so a background tab or a sleeping screen doesn't lose any time.

How do I save my lap times?

Press Copy laps and paste into a spreadsheet. Each row has the lap number, the lap time, the total, and a note on the fastest and slowest laps. Laps aren't stored, so they clear when you reset or reload.

Can I keep it visible while I work in another app?

Yes. Start opens a small floating stopwatch that stays on top of other windows in browsers that support it, and Float brings it back if you close it.

Can I show it on a projector?

Use Full screen on the computer driving the projector. If the projector is an extended display, Second screen puts the clock there and keeps the buttons on your laptop.

Need to count down instead? Use the main timer, try the floating timer, the Pomodoro timer, the classroom timer, the stage timer or the interval timer, or read how the online stopwatch works.
